In O, The Oprah Magazine, Oprah annually releases her Favorite Things gift list, for the holiday season. Anywhere from a smart television to a personalized dog blanket to gourmet chocolates, Oprah lists her favorite gifts and treats for the holidays. “Sometimes it’s the little things that make for the most thoughtful gifts,” as Winfrey expresses in her December issue of her magazine. Also, her new cookbook is also on the list, available for preorder, along with other books from her book club. This exciting favorite things list is a smart business strategy for Oprah because she is using all of her media tools to sell more of her products from other parts of her media empire.

The Oprah Winfrey Network has released a television series called, “Queen Sugar,” which originated from a book in Oprah’s Book Club. This series is about siblings, who after their father dies, must overcome their strained relationships and learn to work together to run the family’s ailing sugarcane farm in the New South. The writer, DuVernay, explains how she does not enjoy the process of writing a book into a teleplay because changes had to be made for it to make sense. This series also demonstrates how the stereotype for black males, usually displayed in the media, is false. “Queen Sugar,” is a great example of how Oprah is utilizing all aspects of the media to make money for herself but to also bash stereotypes that put a bad name on the black culture.
