Oprah Winfrey & Ava DuVernay: A TV Dream Team Talks ‘Queen Sugar’

The Oprah Winfrey Network has released a television series called, “Queen Sugar,” which originated from a book in Oprah’s Book Club. This series is about siblings, who after their father dies, must overcome their strained relationships and learn to work together to run the family’s ailing sugarcane farm in the New South. The writer, DuVernay, explains how she does not enjoy the process of writing a book into a teleplay because changes had to be made for it to make sense. This series also demonstrates how the stereotype for black males, usually displayed in the media, is false. “Queen Sugar,” is a great example of how Oprah is utilizing all aspects of the media to make money for herself but to also bash stereotypes that put a bad name on the black culture.
